The umbrella body of Polytechnic students in Nigeria, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to turn a deaf ear to allegations of corruption and financial impropriety levelled against the Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Ibrahim Magu by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
The students expressed worry that if Magu is not investigated over the allegation of abuse of office by a key member of Buhari’s administration, it may be sending a wrong signal, maintaining that the President has been presented with opportunity to defend his integrity.
In a statement on Tuesday issued by the National President of the association, Sunday A. Asuku he insisted that Malami’s allegation should not be treated with levity or overlooked.
“Not minding nor questioning his overstay in office in the capacity of an Ag. Chairman, we solely believe it’s the duty of the Government to put in place anybody who is deem fit for the job, either acting or substantive however, it is the duty of all Nigerians to protect this institution (EFCC) as that is the only institution we confide and look up to for questioning and checkmating corrupt Nigerians, the FG should not entertain any chances capable of dragging the integrity of our country to test.
“The recent attacks on the office of the SGF, Malami by some persons /stakeholders and co is worrisome, questionable and unwarranted, in a country where there’s law and order, everybody is a suspect until he/she is confirmed a culprit by a competent court of law, nobody is above the law, neither Ibrahim Magu nor Malami.
“We are of the opinion that the FG /Senate should order the Ag. Chairman EFCC, Ibrahim Magu to evacuate his office with immediate allacrity for proper investigation so as not to give the general public mixed feelings, the refusal of the former Senate assembly to substantiate the Acting Chairman EFCC, relating him to funny and questionable antecedent is still fresh in the memories of we the citizens.
“Ibrahim Magu (EFCC Ag. Chairman) prove your innocence” he stated.
