The Chief Executive Officer McKESSON Properties Limited, Chief Olaiya Michael Olobatoke has decried the poor management of local governments system across the country.
The businessman describes shape of local government authorities as worrisome, adding that the state Chief Executives are responsible for the gradual death of local governments.
In a chat with SGTV News, Mr. Olabatoke while exonerating the federal government from the near extinction state of local governments said the issue of local government and state joint account has remained a challenge.
“The closest government to the grassroot is the local government. Basically the problem of local government are the governors.
“I will not blame the federal government because as far as I’m concerned, the federal government reasonably makes efforts to provide budgetary allocations to the local governments.
“The issue of joint account with the governors. A situation where allocation comes from Abuja and stop at a point instead of going directly to the people. A man decides to sit somewhere and say let me re-allocate. That’s where the problem is” he said.
Mr. Olabatoke who is aspiring for Kabba/Bunu-Ijumu federal Constituency said the challenges of ineffectiveness will continue to affect the local governments until they begin to receive direct allocations from the federal government without the interference of the governors.
The property management expert further noted that even though the country’s democratic governance is not faring well, but there is an improvement from what it was in 1999 when the current dispensation came on board.
While observing that the worst form of democracy is better than military rule, he noted that there is room for improvement in the country’s civil governance.
