Benue communal clash leaves 2 dead, scores injured

A renewed clash between residents of Oju and Konshisha Local Government Areas of Benue State has led to the death of at least two persons while many sustained injuries.

It was gathered that the fight started when a farmer from Konshisha LG strayed into another’s farmland at Okpute Ainu in Oju LG.

Residents of the two LGAs later stormed each other’s communities and razed down some buildings.

A local, who craved anonymity, said, “Last week, a farmer from Konshisha (Tiv land) entered the farm of someone at Okpute Ainu village (Igede land). The farmer confronted him and before you know it, it degenerated to a fight and the two sustained matchet cut.

“But the incident of Tuesday was unprovoked, the Tiv people invaded Igede community shooting sporadically and burnt down our houses. As I talk to you, two persons were killed from our side (Igede).

Meanwhile, the State Police Command debunked the communal clash, saying that there was no crisis between the two council areas.

The command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, said, “There was no crisis, no fight, there was only a threat but the police came to dialogue with them, so no one died because there was no fight.”
