PENCOM Leadership: A new beginning of people-centered pension administration birthed … CSO group

Commend Predidency, Senate for appointment and confirmation

A coalition of media and Civil Society Groups in Nigeria, African Media Roundtable Initiative (AMRI) has hailed the Senate for the confirmation of the appointment of the Director General of the National Pension Commission, PENCOM, Aisha Umar after her fruitful three years sojourn in acting capacity with visible record of reforms and outstanding achievement. The group which is a foremost coalition of media and Civil Society Groups in Africa, comprising almost a hundred organisations also commended President Buhari for rising above sentiment, blackmail and falsehood that have trailed the process of the appointment and subsequent confirmation.

AMRI welcomes this with joy and excitement and indeed grateful to the Nigerian Senate for doing the needful in letting her continue with the aggressive repositioning of the pension industry which she started three years ago, for which we see visible results to her credit and that of her team. Her stay in office in acting capacity has shown her to be a woman of high integrity, a reformer and true patriot.

AMRI says her catalogue of milestones in the pension industry which has brought the asset in the sector to an all-time high of over 11 trillion Naira further highlights how much capacity our women wield in making meaningful contributions in the overall development of our country.

The Initiative further highlights that through her initiative, Micro Pension Plan (MPP) our people in the informal sector, including the barbers, mechanics, welders et al who indeed are the real drivers of the economy have all been captured in pension plan, which is not only a quantum leap in boosting the revenue base of the sector but a means of providing safety net for them and reduce dependence on extended family members when they get aged.

AMRI reiterates the high compliance rate within the PFAs to extant laws governing the sector because they know they have a regulator who is not only ready to bark but bite when infractions are recorded.

As she and her team work vigorously towards a transformed National Pension Commission which results will be massive, AMRI appeals to relevant stakeholders to continue offering Aisha Umar and her team the needed support to enthrone a sector that will further be the backbone of improved standard of living for our senior citizens who have committed their youthful age in serving this nation.

Thank you
