As the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic continues, branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have stated that universities are not ready for safe reopening.
The branches came to this conclusion after assessing COVID-19 protocols in the universities.
In separate interviews, the chapters of the union commented on the directive of the National Universities Commission that universities could resume on January 18, but must adhere to COVID-19 protocols in hostels and lecture halls.
The union stated that although its members were ready to start work, the government had not put measures in place for the safe reopening of the schools.
The branches of the union interviewed all pointed to inadequate preparation for the pandemic, stating that none of the institutions had facilities to adhere to COVID-19 protocols.
